SAIL for Teacher Leaders

The SAIL for Teacher Leader program is an 18-month professional development program blending face-to-face institutes, online support learning and collegial networking.  A completely online delivery model also is available.  SAIL for Teacher Leaders is about energizing and mobilizing the untapped attributes and contributions of teachers to strengthen student performance and increase student achievement.

Institute/Module 1: Teacher Leadership: Identifying the Sleeping Giants

  1. Exploring mindsets about leadership
  2. Historical overview of teacher leadership
  3. Current research about teacher leadership's impact on student learning
  4. Role of teacher as a change agent
  5. Examination of one's own knowledge base, skill set, and leadership abilities

Institute/Module 2: Equipping the Sleeping Giants

  1. Perceived roles and responsibilities of teacher leadership
  2. Adult learning theory and implications for practice
  3. Facilitation skills
  4. Learning styles/social styles inventories
  5. Facilitating courageous conversations
  6. Mobilizing colleagues around a common vision
  7. Time management and prioritizing work

Institute/Module 3: The Sleeping Giants Dance with Data

  1. Overview of professional development and teaching standards
  2. Alignment of teacher leader functions to school and district goals
  3. Role of teacher leader with data management and data-driven decision making
  4. Analysis of student work and student assessment data
  5. Assessment-based lesson design

Institute/Module 4: The Sleeping Giants Increase the Capacity of ALL Learners

  1. Meeting the needs of diverse learners
  2. Creating a community of caring and high standards
  3. Leading discussions about modeling culturally relevant pedagogy
  4. Stages of teaching
  5. Teacher leader's role as change agent, advocate, coach, or instructor

Institute/Module 5: Sustaining and Celebrating the Sleeping Giants

  1. Developing and creating structures of support that promote teacher leadership
  2. School culture surveys
  3. Planning for change and responding to obstacles
  4. Teacher leader's role in professional learning communities
  5. Assessing where an how the teacher leader's gifts best meet the needs of the building, district, and beyond

By completing the SAIL for Teacher Leader program, Learners have the opportunity to earn 18 graduate hours toward their Master's or 12 doctoral hours toward their Ed.D. or Ph.D. when enrolled at Concordia University Chicago (CUC).  CUC is accredited through NCATE and is completely online.  The Master's degree in Teacher Leadership is approximately $10,500, and Doctoral degrees in Teacher Leadership begin at $28,582
